Global food insecurity has been rising since 2017, even before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the increasing frequency and severity of climate shocks, regional conflicts and the pandemic were all taking their toll, disrupting food production and distribution, and driving up the cost of feeding people and families. The situation took an even more dramatic turn with the war in Ukraine. This pushed the prices of food and fertilizers higher still hurting importers and prompting several countries to impose export restrictions. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, around the world more than 900million people go to bed hungry every night. The impact of the food shock is felt everywhere, but the suffering is worst in 48 low income countries with a majority in Africa.

Karamazou operates food collection facilities in the countries we operate in. Our food banks are created in partnership with local  community organisations. They’re best placed to understand local needs, and we provide them with the tools, training knowledge and financing to start a food bank, this enables us to provide food collection outside of our main facilities and in rural areas. Our food bank supply is developed by forming partnerships with local supermarkets and local food producers. Karamazou also as well developed relationships with international suppliers of certain food products which we buy, ship and import into the countries we operate in.
